3 More Reasons to Visit Toledo Bend Lake Country this Fall

There’s something special about fall in Toledo Bend Lake Country. The temperatures begin to cool, small towns come alive, and generations of families and visitors gather to celebrate the food, history and traditions that make Sabine Parish such a unique corner of Louisiana.

This year brings even more reason to plan a visit. From the 50th anniversary of one of Louisiana’s most beloved food festivals to a celebration of our region’s fascinating “Free State” history and the return of thousands of Christmas lights along Toledo Bend Lake, the next few months are packed with reasons to make a trip to Sabine Parish.

Here are three celebrations you won’t want to miss.

50th Annual Zwolle Tamale Fiesta October 8–10, 2026 | Zwolle, Louisiana

This isn’t just another year for the Zwolle Tamale Fiesta—it’s the 50th anniversary of a tradition that has been bringing people together for generations. For five decades, the town of Zwolle has celebrated its unique Spanish and Native American heritage with a festival centered around one very delicious tradition: tamales. And there will be plenty of them.

The 50th Annual Zwolle Tamale Fiesta returns October 8–10 at the Zwolle Festival Grounds for three days filled with food, music, dancing and family fun. Festival favorites include the parade, tamale-making traditions, carnival rides, arts and crafts, live music, contests, the famous Mud Bog and, of course, plenty of opportunities to enjoy Zwolle’s signature tamales.

This year's milestone celebration makes it an especially memorable time to experience the Fiesta. Whether Zwolle is home, you come back every October as part of a family tradition, or you've never experienced the festival before, the 50th anniversary is the perfect year to join the celebration.

46th Annual Sabine Freestate Festival November 6–8, 2026 | Florien, Louisiana

Freestate festival re-enactment A few weeks later, the celebration moves south to Florien for a festival rooted in one of the most fascinating chapters of Louisiana history.

The 46th Annual Sabine Freestate Festival takes place November 6–8 and celebrates the era when this part of western Louisiana was known as the Neutral Ground—or “Free State”—between the United States and Spanish Texas.

Today, Florien brings that history to life with a weekend full of small-town Louisiana hospitality. Visitors can expect a mix of history, entertainment and good food, with festivities traditionally including western reenactments and shoot-outs, pioneer demonstrations, arts and crafts, a parade, live entertainment, children's activities and more.

Another highlight is the No Man's Land BBQ Championship, bringing the smell of barbecue—and a little friendly competition to town. Or catch a LIVE Re-enactment each night of the festival. It’s the kind of festival where history, community and Louisiana culture all come together. Slow down, explore Florien and enjoy a fall weekend that feels unmistakably Sabine Parish.
